Investigative journalism is journalism that presents information that has been withheld or hidden from the public, or information that is obscure and hard to find. Usually, it is information that a certain portion of the population does not wish the general public to have. The general public may be affected by this information and therefore has the right to know. Sometimes, it is simply journalism that takes more time and effort, and tenacious digging to expose.

Freelance journalism is writing that is not connected to any one news organization. The freelance journalist usually finds his or her own stories, develops the idea and presents it to various editors or producers. When editors or producers agree to buy the story, they work with the freelance journalist to bring the idea to fruition.
